Today's Schedule
9:00 AM
Depart villa via SR71 south and SR2 to Buonconvento, then SR438 north through the heart of the Crete to Monte Oliveto Maggiore. The SR438 through the Crete Senesi IS the experience β allow extra time and drive slowly.
10:00 AM
Enter the Crete Senesi on SR438 from Buonconvento heading northeast toward Asciano. The biancane clay mounds become visible within minutes. Pull over at viewpoints β particularly the stretch between Buonconvento and San Giovanni d'Asso, where the landscape is most dramatic. Allow 20β30 minutes of scenic stops.
10:30 AM
Monte Oliveto Maggiore (free, opens 9:15): turn off SR438 and descend through the cypress forest to the monastery. Allow 1.5β2 hours minimum for the cloister frescoes. Walk the circuit in the correct narrative sequence (panels are numbered). Note the stylistic shift between Signorelli's and Sodoma's panels β visible panel by panel. The abbey shop sells excellent honey, herbal products, and olive oil from the monastery estate.
12:00 PM
β οΈ Abbey closes at 12:00 for lunch (reopens 15:15). Plan to finish the cloister circuit by 11:55 AM. Drive 10 minutes to Buonconvento for lunch.
